48 hours in Jakarta with a Self-Guided Tour and Itinerary

So, your heading to Jakarta? Great! This is a nice stop for a 48 hour layover or a taste of this area. Jakarta was not my favorite place to stay long-term in Indonesia, but it did have a few great spots to check out for history and to learn about the local culture. It was also the cheapest place to fly into around Asia to begin our Asia exploration. Here is an itinerary to see a lot of this city. Be aware though, I usually do long days of exploring, up to 12 hour days. Just my preference to get in as much as possible while I am in the city.

Day 1: Taman Mini Indo Indah (TMII) East

  1. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral
  2. Merderka Square
  3. Istiqlal Mosque, or Masjid Istiqlal
  4. “Monas”- National Monument
  5. Lunch
  6. Sunda Kelapa Harbour
  7. Jakarta Natural History Museum
  8. Jalan Surabya

St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral– We stumbled upon a church and found out it was a famous church. It has amazing architecture outside, under restoration but you can still see a lot of it. Nice front façade and good for a photo shoot.

Merderka Square- Central are in Jakarta and considered one of the largest squares in the world, 75 acres.

Istiqlal Mosque, or Masjid Istiqlal, the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. We did not go in, because there was a Ramadan event outside with local booths of clothing, food, and small items. We tried some local food outside and walked over the bridge for a view.

“Monas”- National Monument– 7AM-12PM, It was closed when we were there around lunch time. It’s a 132 meter skinny white tower in the center of Merdeka Square, built to symbolize the fight for independence in 1945. There is a view from the top, according to the web.

Sunda Kelapa Harbour– is located at the mouth of the Ciliwung River, once an old Portuguese harbor for trading. You can see people selling fish early in the morning at the old fish market, the best action is around 5-6 AM. This used to be called Batavia or Old Town.

Jakarta Natural History Museum

Jalan Surabya– cute area that looks like an antique market with items that are made to look vintage mixed in with some real antiques and unique pieces. I hope your good at the haggle game, and get a good price- most things are 3 to 4 times what they are worth. It’s about 6-7 streets long with about 20-25 shops. There is a back alley area you can see across a bridge, but it looked more like private areas, so we didn’t go there. Go towards the end of closing time for a better deal. Grab a taxi in and out of the area, because there is not much else around. Makes for some cool photos and you might pick up a cool treasure.

Batik Museum Review:

We took a taxi from the square to the Batik Museum. In the back garden area, there is a hands-on class about 2 hours long, It’s really worth it and you get a custom souvenires to take home. The people will show you all of the steps along the way. First, you trace a design on paper, copy it to the material piece, using a wax pen outline the pen marks and make a mess of dripping in wax everywhere, then placing it on the material. Dip in dye, then dry outside. You need patience for this, but it was a great hands-on experience.  Hints: pick a simple design without a lot of details, it comes out better. Freestyle your name or date somewhere too.  The museum itself was disappointing and had a limited collection. I was done in 10 minutes. The entry door was HUGE and the building itself was more interesting to me. There was a small garden just outside with some sleeping workers enjoying their nap.

Jin De Yuan Temple- My Story

By starting at the square, you will see a tourist booth with a lot of black and white pictures. They were really helpful and gave us a map of the local temples with information and directions. We headed off for the first stop, which he told us it was behind the “blue car park” building. This was about 7 or 8 blocks left from the booth. Along the way we saw people selling snacks, fruits, and some souvenirs on the streets. We came to a building under construction and asked again for directions. This guy took our map to around 6 different local people and no one knew the place. Finally, a guy pointed to a direction so off we went. This area was pretty sketchy and if I was alone, I might not have gone. It reminded me of an old alleyway with shacks and falling down roofs, muddy dirt roads, chickens, and stray dogs. The delightful part was, every person was inviting us over to see what they were cooking on the street (not like a vendor market, but just local people cooking their lunch). They were all smiling and very friendly. It made me feel more at ease walking into the unknown. We stumbled upon an alley of a local fruit market. SCORE! There about 15 tables of food and sweets. It was so fresh and quite a lot of variety of fruit. We bought a few pieces (this was fun to use hand motions and pointing to communicate). We decided to keep going since we were obviously lost anyways, and went all the way through the market and out the other side which ended up being a busy street.  BE careful with motor bikes in these alley ways, they will drive right over you! We took some great pictures, but make sure you ask first of course!

The best part of getting lost here was we actually found the temple on the other side of the market. Very lucky I would say! To help you better, it’s across the street from a Catholic Church. I think it’s only one in this area. The church is worth a quick visit inside the gate to see the statues outside. They had a few table to relax a swell and play checkers.

After finally finding the temple, we were happy to see such bright colors of red statues, trim, and lots of great designs. They also had the largest wax candles I have ever seen! They were on the floors and tables, but looked like they could burn for a year. We made a small donation then back outside to grab a tuk tuk out of the area. ($20,000 to the Square)

Hotel Recommendations: 1. We picked up our bags from the previous hotel (they will hold them for you at no charge) to the next hotel. The 101 Hotel has some cool décor, photos, and excellent customer service. The rooms had nice wood furniture, but the view was a little bleh. Since we were not there for the hotel, it was a good deal, clean, and nice location. They also have a tourism office at the front desk, and it’s easy to book a tour with them. The tour was top notch and a good price after speaking to other people. You can even get breakfast to go for your early tour the next day. It’s about 40 minutes to the Grand Mall if you need to shop for anything. ($30,000 taxi)  Links: http://phm-hotels.com/the1o1hotels/    2. Also the JA FM7 Resort Hotel is really fabulous with a great rooftop view, nice ECO rooms, and Really great food! I was impressed! The bonus is the HUGE indoor pool and spa services unlike any other hotel. It’s really convenient next to the airport as well. (Pics below are the JA FM7) Link: http://fm7hotel.com/

Hints: Take the local Free bus around a lot of Jakarta. From our hotel to the first stop was about 10 minutes but we got off on the wrong spot, so we just walked and asked people for directions. You can see a lot by walking and randomly meeting people and finding things!

*Take pictures of the places you want to go on your phone, (I did screenshots from websites) this works great to get directions around without knowing the language. We got really good at sign language and saying thank you!

Do you have other destinations to add for Jakarta?

  • Hello. I have checked your gogoeverywhere.com and i see you’ve got some duplicate content so probably it is the reason that you don’t rank high in google.
But you can fix this issue fast. There is a tool that rewrites articles like human, just search in google: miftolo’s tools

  • Wow, that is a comprehensive itinerary with places to see , stay, eat ! I am sure anyone planning a visit to Jakarta would benefit from this. Thanks for sharing

  • Great post!! For some reason I didn’t enjoy Jakarta at all, I didn’t feel comfortable while I was there it was too dirty and polluted, but maybe I should give it another chance!!

  • Jakarta has never really come to mind as a holiday destination for us but there is obviously quite a few things to experience & as you say it is a budget friendly flight option for exploring Asia. I will remember your post should we be lucky enough to find ourselves in Jakarta. Thanks for sharing your tips

  • Great post! Jakarta hasn’t been high on my list for places to visit although I would LOVE the batik museum. When last in Bali I took my family to a batik making workshop and it was the highlight of our trip. Odd highlight I know but it was sooo much fun.

  • Thank you for providing such a detailed schedule. India is on my list for next year so I will have to draw back to this for some inspiration.

  • Wow what a trip, and so much of everything seen in Jakarta. Maybe I’ll go there sometime. It would be interesting to learn more about their culture and see everything on their own
    to the eyes.

  • Marta

Great suggestions for what to see! I especially liked your tip about taking photos of where you want to go in order to communicate when not speaking the language 🙂
